Delightful Thai Food
Thai food is a delightful burst of tanginess and spiciness. It comes to no surprise that Thai flavours are especially distinct due to their use of unique spices and herbs. If you’re just like us and are a Thai food enthusiast, this blog will list out the top 8 best Thai foods that you will probably be familiar with.
#1. Tom Yum Goong (Spicy Shrimp Soup)
Undoubtedly the most popular Thai cuisine in the world. Tom Yum Goong or Tom Yum soup is a bold blend of refreshing lemongrass, chili, galangal, lime leaves, shallots, lime juice and fish sauce that makes this a truly remarkable traditional soup. Giving it an unforgettable herbal and refreshing kick. Other components that can be added to the soup includes fresh prawns and straw mushrooms. But the great thing about Tom Yum soup is that it is very versatile, any type of meat can accompany this unique-tasting dish without interrupting this exotic and invigorating soup that just screams ‘Thailand’!
#2. Som Tum (Spicy Green Papaya Salad)
Garlic, chives, green beans, cherry tomatoes and shredded raw papaya make this an outlandish dish that is both difficult to get enough of as well as to handle its intense heat. The flavours of a refreshing, rounded sweet-sour-spicy flavour is truly unforgettable. In some regions, peanuts, dried shrimp or salted crab is added into the mix, so if you’re in Thailand - why not explore for as many variations as you?
#3. Tom Kha Kai (Chicken in Coconut Soup)
Thai food tends to be very spicy. But with Tom Kha Kai, what you find is a milder, tamer twist of Tom Yum. This tasty Chicken in Coconut Soup is made with fiery chilies, thinly sliced young galangal, crushed shallots, stalks of lemongrass and tender strips of chicken. Unlike Tom Yum, the texture of this soup is thicker and has hints of spicy coconut milk. Top it off with some fresh lime leaves, it becomes a sweet-smelling concoction, making this soup both creamy and compelling!
This is easily one of the most internationally popular Thai dishes out there. Made by a fistful of thin rice noodles, bean sprouts, onion and egg are dropped in a searing hot wok before being plated. The flavours and textures are a very interactive eating experience. The fish sauce, sugar, chilli powder and finely ground peanuts give this dish that extra umph that makes this dish anything but boring!
#5. Kai Med Ma Muang (Chicken with Cashew Nuts)
You might go nuts for this. (Pardon the pun!) Perhaps one of the most wildly contrasting dishes out there. With tender chicken that is roasted with cashews, sweet soy sauce, onions, chilies, pepper, carrot and mushrooms; this dish is something you must try! If you like something abit sweet and savoury, this Thai dish is just right for you!
#6. Geng Kheaw Wan Gai (Green Curry Chicken)
Look out for some delicious green curry coming your way! Yes, you read that correctly, green curry! This green delicacy is among the favourites for Thai food enthusiasts. Why? It could be the creaminess of the coconut milk. It could also be the sumptuous chicken that accompanies the curry so perfectly. It could even be the extremely spicy green peppers that blends so beautifully in the dish. We are not sure... but does it matter?
#7. Massaman Curry
A favourite among Thai people, Massaman is not however, a Thai word. It actually comes from the Muslim community during the 19th century. The curry is softer compared to other Thai curries but it does have some dried peppers that pack a powerful spiciness to it. Blended together with rich flavours derived from cinnamon, nutmeg, cumin and several others, these are all spices imported from the Middle East. Lucky for us, Massaman Curry can be found in almost any restaurant! Just be on the lookout for it!
#8. Banana Pancakes
This is a backpacker food. But you seriously can’t go wrong with trying this out! It is so good, it’s not even funny! These delicious banana pancakes topped with vanilla sauce are to die for! There are countless variations that you can try. Some even without bananas! (If it treats your fancy).
