Posted on 06 June 2019

‘Tis the season of rendang, ketupat, serunding and all-around shameless eating. The upcoming Raya break is a good opportunity to sit back, relax, and unleash our inner gluttons, and there’s no better place to do so than in Malaysia, a food paradise in its own right. However, when you’re spoilt for choice, the tragic problem of “Nak makan apa weyh?” always seems to arise.

If you’re feeling too overwhelmed to make a decision, fret not! This list will guide you on where and what to eat this Raya holiday, and it also includes some seasonal items so don’t miss out!

Ipoh, Perak

While Ipoh is most known for chicken rice and white coffee, it also features mouth-watering Malay cuisine that is worthy of a Raya feast. Those seeking for halal chicken rice options should definitely visit Restaurant Fuziah Nasi Ayam Pasar Bulat. The nasi ayam here is one of the oldest in town and a crowd favourite - the chicken is roasted to perfection then served with steaming fragrant rice. Puan Fuziah Arshad’s husband had learned the recipe during his stay in Singapore years ago.

Other than that, if you’re craving for some different flavours this Raya, Dim Sum should be on top of your makan list in Ipoh. While most of the good dim sum places are usually non-halal and closed by the afternoon, Green Town Dimsum Café breaks the mould in this regard! Not only is it open from 8am through 9 pm, it is also one of the very few places that offer halal Dim Sum! From prawn dumpling to BBQ Chicken Pau to Siew Mai, Dim Sum makes for a wholesome family breakfast where everyone can bond by sharing the food served in small steamer baskets.

Last but not least on the Ipoh makan list is Gerai Nasi Goreng Udang! As the name would suggest, their signature is fried rice that is literally covered in prawns and squids, which had been cooked in their special secret sauce.

Overall, Ipoh is a food haven waiting for you to explore over the Raya break. One day is simply not enough to discover all the food Ipoh has to offer, so you can even spend the night glamping and let loose at the Sunway Lost World of Tambun the following day.

Starbucks

Before you start asking what a skinny soy latte has to do with Raya, hear me out. Starbucks recently released a seasonal Hari Raya menu that fused traditional kuih raya with western desserts. The range includes Green Velvet Nangka Cake, Gula Melaka Donut, Bandung Éclair, and Ondeh-Ondeh Muffin. Be sure to get your hands on these unique sweet treats before they’re gone!

Melaka

One of Melaka’s main attractions is the local Peranakan culture, and Peranakan cuisine is something that you should definitely try when you’re in this historical city. Luckily, there many halal Baba Nyonya restaurants in Melaka that you can try during the holiday season. Hidden in the lively Jonker Street, Kocik Kitchen is a popular choice with locals and tourists alike. The traditional interior of the restaurant, complete with batik tablecloths and porcelain kitchenware, will make you feel like you’re eating at grandmother’s place. Among the delicacies, you can taste here are Nyonya laksa, fried Assam fish, lemak prawns, kuih, and many more.

Apart from that, Jonker 88 is a great place to get a cool dessert after your meal. While they offer three unique variations of laksa (that only contains halal meat), people also flock to Jonker 88 for their cendol. What makes their cendol so good? The shop makes their own gula melaka - a rich, gooey syrup that certainly elevates the taste of the cendol as a whole.
