Okay, we'll break our rule just once! - Although this animal is not wholly confined to Australia and can also be found in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, the Tree Kangaroo is a stunning and unique animal in the macropod family. They normally live in mountainous cloud forests at elevations of up to 11,000 feet. They spend most of their time in trees. And they are absolutely fascinating to observe!

Any Looney Tunes fans here? This adorable creature is a marsupial. The ‘Tassie Devil’ lives up to its devilish standards thanks to its horrible screeching noises and notorious bad temper. This black, furry creature may look cute and harmless but don't be fooled - the 'Tassie Devil' is a natural carnivorous predator with very sharp teeth.

Its strong jaw allows it to completely demolish anything it eats - skin, bones and anything in-between. These animals used to live on mainland Australia, but are now only found in Tasmania, making it their state sigil.
